Protect Yourself From Chlorine Toxicity

We LOVE our pool. It is a great way to beat the heat on these hot and humid summer days here in Oklahoma. I have even been able to move my exercise programs to the pool which has been a great transition.

With MTHFR in my family, chlorine is a huge issue and I have to make sure their bodies are able to detox or we can have a few rough days of emotions. I have found that we need to have routines and protocols in place with the level of chlorine exposure we see daily. This has upped my game in providing protection for myself and my family.

Our pool is a chlorine system. I do have plans to convert it to a salt-water system, but for now, we work with what we have. Please know that salt water systems still have chlorine in them, just lower levels, so you still need to protect yourself from chlorine toxicity.

First, you need to be on the look out for any of these symptoms, especially with extended pool use. If you are not sure if you or your children have MTHFR gene mutations, which affects detoxification pathways, these symptoms are good indicators that their pathway is either struggling or completely compromised. There are several precautions you can make to help protect yourself from chlorine toxicity. Having the products on hand and being disciplined in your routine will allow you and your family to enjoy your vacation or summer being at the pool.

First, try and find an outdoor pool. Indoor pools put you at higher risk for respiratory issues. Your skin and lungs are two of your main elimination pathway organs. Help them out with at least being able to breathe while swimming.

Having foundations in place so your body can detox pathogens is the key to beating toxicity, again, especially for MTHFR defects. Having these habits in place before swimming will allow your body to combat the stress.

1. Shower BEFORE pool use. Hydrating your body before pool use helps to seal the barrier for your skin.

2. Use a Vitamin C Spray. Vitamin C spray forms a barrier of protection by neutralizing chlorine. Taking daily vitamin c and using a spray is a must. Have these in your swim bag every time you go.

3. Use a high quality coconut oil before swimming. Everyone knows water and oil do not mix. Using coconut oil before getting into the pool can act as a barrier and prevents chlorinated water from penetrating through your skin. Coconut oil also has a natural SPF of 4-5 and contains natural antioxidants.

4. Take a daily probiotic. Protecting your natural gut flora from the damaging effects of chlorine is very important. Probiotics will allow the gut to have continued colonization of good bacteria.

5. Take NaC daily. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NaC) is a non-essential, free form amino acid that is a highly stable form of cysteine. NaC has antioxidant properties and is necessary for the production of glutathione. Glutathione helps the body cope with oxidative stress which is associated with disease, and improves the number and activity of immune cells within the body. This allows your body’s detoxification pathway to remain open.

After swimming, put these protocols into action as soon as possible. Your skin is a thirsty organ that absorbs everything.

1. Shower again immediately after swimming.

2. Take an Epsom salt bath. Epsom salt bath (2 cups with bath). Epsom salt baths allow magnesium salts to enter the body and is effective for dry skin and for reducing inflammation.

3. Eat foods rich in Sulfur and Iodine. Sulfur helps in the production of an important antioxidant in your body called glutathione, which protects cells from damage. Iodine is necessary for iodine function. Chemically speaking, bromine and chlorine mimic iodine. High exposure to these elements leaves them to compete with each other leaving iodine the losing competitor and leaving your body iodine deficient.

4. Use a topical lotion with Magnesium and MSM. MSM is an organic sulfur that works synergistically with magnesium. It encourages detoxification and glutathione production, contributing to optimal health and immune support.

WARNING ABOUT EOs and the sun. Some EOs are extremely photosensitive. Cedarwood can be one of them. If you choose to use a brand that has a photosensitive EO in your spray, use only as an AFTER-SUN spray. The reason why you’d want this oil in your spay is because of its lymphatic stimulant action and skin healing properties. Just make sure to use AFTER sun exposure. You can also omit it altogether if that is your comfort level.

Easy-To-Make Liquid Hand Soap

If you’re like me, you want to rid your home of as many toxins as you can.  One of the simplest changes you can make is your hand soap.  With this easy, 4-ingredient recipe for liquid hand soap, you’ll be setting your own custom-looking jars around each sink of your house in no time!  Not only will you be eliminating harsh hand soaps, you will be saving money with this very inexpensive method.  WIN!

What you need for your liquid hand soap:

– Mason Jars
–  Foaming Pump attachments
– Distilled Water
– Castile Soap
– Vitamin E Oil
– Anti-Bacterial Essential Oil

If you don’t already have your jars and pumps, hop on over to Amazon and get them ordered.  They are super affordable and you can choose the designs from the comfort of your home.

When I make soap, I make a large batch and refill my jars once a month unless we run out before then.  This recipe will make one jar.

– 1 cup distilled water
– 1/3 cup Castile Soap
– 1/2 half dropper Vitamin E oil (this oil has Avocado oil and Jojoba oil in it)
– 10-15 drops of your choice of anti-bacterial essential oil (I prefer Thieves or Purification).

Pour water into jar.  In a measuring cup add soap, vitamin E oil, and EO (adding in the vitamin E oil gives you a moisturizing hand soap).  Pour mix into water and attach lid.   After you have attached the lid, give the jar a couple shakes and you are all set.  I told you it was simple!  The foaming hand pump attachment really allows your soap to go a long way.  You will never buy commercial soap again!!

Homemade Mouthwash

Dental hygiene….the very habit that can make or break a date.  So many people go to extreme measures to cover up offensive mouth odor instead of fixing the problem. After all, minty-chewing gum and breath mints are in high demand.

What about knowing how to eliminate the bacteria that is growing inside your mouth? Two great solutions you can utilize are:  using a bacteria-killing mouthwash and oil pulling (we will get to oil pulling in another blog).

Give your mouth six months and you will be amazed at the improvement in your oral hygiene.  By eliminating the growing bacteria, you eliminate most of your hygiene issues.

First let’s talk about a good, alcohol-free mouthwash.  Better yet, let’s talk about making your own for merely pennies.  By making your own, you are in complete control of what goes into your mouthwash.  I have eliminated all toxic home and body care products in  the past year.  I can feel my body responding positively and my hair and skin have never been so soft!  When choosing a mouthwash, it is very important to me that I am not putting anything harmful into my body for the sake of ‘covering up oder’.  There is no alcohol or any other toxic ingredients that you will need to worry about in this recipe.

The supplies you need to make your own mouthwash are:

1.  1 pint Mason jar with lid
2.  Distilled water
3.  Colloidal Silver (Research Colloidal Silver)
4.  Stevia
5.  6 EOs (we will talk about later)

Using colloidal silver has so many benefits.  According to the Global Healing Center, “Silver kills harmful organisms and this is why colloidal silver is used to disinfect water. Historically, silver was used to preserve milk.  Settlers would drop a silver dollar in the milk jug to keep it from spoiling.  Babies were fed with silver spoons because those that did were generally perceived to be healthier.”  Read more on the specifics of how colloidal silver combats harmful organisms.  Needless to say, if you don’t have colloidal silver in your home, you need to!

The 6 essential oils you will use are:

1.  2 drops Peppermint (Vitality)
2.  2 drops  Lemon (Vitality)
3.  2 drops Cinnamon Bark (Vitality)
4.  1 drop Clove (Vitality)
5.  1 drop Spearmint (Vitality)
6.  1 drop Eucalyptus Radiata
(Click on each oil to learn about the benefits) Not all essential oils are the same so be aware of using oils that have synthetic ingredients or are anything less than 100%  unadulterated essential oils.  It’s critical to your health.  These are the only brand of Essential Oils I trust!

Let’s make some mouthwash!

Fill mason jar with:
-1 cup distilled water
-3 Tbsp Colloidal Silver
-2 Tbsp Stevia
-Add essential oils

Shake well each time you use and use within 10 days.

You can adjust the ingredients to your own tasting.  Make sure to use the mouthwash after you brush and floss your teeth (at least twice and day).  Swoosh your mouth for 60 seconds each time.  DO NOT SWALLOW!  Remember we are combating bacteria so we do not want any of it to go back into our system.

Organic Almond Milk

Why make your own almond milk? Besides the nutritional value, you have the assurance of knowing what is exactly in your milk. Guaranteed to be free of dairy, soy, lactose, gluten, casein, egg, and carrageenan, you can also be reassured that your milk has no artificial colors, flavors or anything else that you can’t pronounce as ingredients (a good nutritional rule to follow:  if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it).

So now let’s talk about what your almond milk DOES have in it…. each cup has about 60 calories and is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin D, and Potassium. You are also in control of the nut-to-water ratio and allowing a much higher nut percentage than commercially available options. A good ratio to follow is 1 cup of almonds to 2 cups of water.

Because of our pure ingredient list, fresh almond milk does not have a long storage life (about 5-6 days in fridge). We rarely let our milk go to waste though. Just a few of our favorite uses for almond milk are in creamy smoothies,  cereal, oatmeal, and a splash for coffee lovers.

What you will need:

Organic Almonds
Distilled Water
Sea Salt
Organic Vanilla or Vanilla Bean
Organic Raw Honey (if you like to sweeten it up)
Blender
Fine Mesh Strainer
Nut Bag or Cheese Cloth
Glass Storage container

1. Soak the amount of almonds you wish to use. I generally use 2 cups. This is the amount my family will use within a week with no waste. Place almonds in a glass bowl and fill with double the volume of cool water. If you’re using a vanilla bean, soak this as well. Let soak at least 8-12 hours.
2. After nuts have soaked, rinse and place in a blender with double the volume of distilled water. If you soaked 2 cups of almonds then use 4 cups of distilled water.
3. Add a pinch of salt, the soaked vanilla bean or extract, and blend on high for about two minutes.
4. Place the mesh strainer over a bowl and pour the milk slowly into the strainer. This is the first filtering step. Let drip until almost all the liquid has seeped through.
5. Next, take the liquid and pour it through a nut bag into another bowl and squeeze to get all liquid separated from the almond meal. You will see beautiful almond meal left in your bag. DO NOT THROW THIS AWAY! For now, set aside for further use.

6.  Take the remaining almond meal that is left in the mesh strainer and filter it through the nut bag the same way, extracting all the milk you can. Again, save that almond meal. I let the almond meal dry out for 2-3 hours before storing or making cookies with it.

7. Store the almond milk in the fridge in an airtight, glass container.

For the Love of Kiwi Part 1

The kiwi fruit…also known as Chinese gooseberries…is one of our favorite fruits. Per serving, this little super food is packed with amazing nutrition that our taste buds just scream for. It’s like our mouth knows how good this fruit is for us. Check out this bad boy’s nutritional content here.

Living on a homestead in Colorado has its many perks, but having a fresh supply of kiwi fruit is not one of them. Farmer’s markets come around during the summer/fall season and the closest Whole Foods is 40 minutes away so needless to say, it is an occasional treat.

As I was cutting into my daughter’s favorite snack one day, she asked me, “Mommy, why don’t you grow your own kiwi? You grow everything else?” Not having a sufficient answer for her, I decided to start my research.

With my growing season cut short by late and early frosts and not having an official greenhouse….yet….I needed to know if I was even able to accomplish growing this delicate fruit. It’s not as simple as planting a seed, transplanting into a large pot, and waiting for the fruit to appear. This little plant has challenged the inner-gardener in me for sure!

First, you need male and female plants…. who knew? The vines do not self-produce, so you need both. One male vine should be able to pollinate up to 8 female vines.  Find out how to tell the difference between male and female vines here.

Second, you need space. Planting each vine up to 12′ apart can get a little tricky. Finding an area that has well-drained soil and full sun with that much space is going to be a problem for smaller backyards, but not impossible. They like it warm but not hot so if your region gets excessively hot, find a shaded place for them during the hottest part of the day. A seasonal trellis can help with this.

Third, you have to fight the frost.  If you’re like me and live in a harsh winter zone, you’ll have to take extra precautions during extreme, early, and late frosts.  Protecting your vines a few times during these unpredictable seasons will pay off for you in the end.  Extra mulching and even covering with plastic will help to ensure the survival of your vines.

If you can adjust to these growing conditions, then you can grow your own kiwi. So let’s get started at the beginning…

1. Choose your fruit. Select a nice organic fruit to harvest your seeds from.

2. Slice your fruit lengthwise, then scooping out as many seeds as you can. I place them on a paper towel to help absorb liquid.
3. Next you have to dislodge any flesh from around the seed. The best way that worked for me was to place seeds in a stainless steel Tea mesh ball.  Rinse repeatedly until all fruit is removed from seed.
4. Place seeds in a glass jar, fill with water and set in a sunny area for about a week. Be sure to change the water everyday to discourage any bacterial growth.
5. Once you see the seeds start to crack open it is time to place them in their make-shift green house. I did this by using a plate, paper towels, and an old plastic food container. Place a paper towel on a plate and saturate with water. Scatter your seeds around the paper towel. Poke several holes into the plastic container and then place it over seeds. Place your little greenhouse in sunny, draft free area for 4-6 more days until you see sprouts. Make sure the paper towel is constantly wet.

6. Once 1/8″ sprouts have emerged from the seed, you may then transplant the seeds into seed-starting containers. Use a good seed-starting soil, organic of course. I use this  organic potting mix.

In about 6-7 days your sprouts will have emerged and you’re well on your way to kiwi fruit.

7. Water daily, to keep the soil moist but not too wet. Once your little vines have developed a strong root system, you can transplant them into larger containers to help them grow.

8. Once the kiwi vines are hardened off, you will transplant the vines into their final resting place. Water well until the roots have taken hold. Mulching will help keep the moisture in.

Now it’s time to enjoy the ‘fruit’ of your labor…hope you’re patient. It only takes 3-5 years for your vines to produce fruit but it will be worth the wait. Stayed tuned for Part 2 of this post. Happy planting!!
